Rosen Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Sciences

Steven D. Rosen, PhD, professor and vice-chair in the Department of Anatomy at UCSF, has been awarded the distinction of Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world’s largest general scientific society. Election as a Fellow is an honor bestowed upon AAAS members by their peers.

As part of the Section on Medical Sciences, Rosen was elected as an AAAS Fellow for pioneering work leading to the discovery of the selectins and their carbohydrate ligands and elucidation of their functions in normal and pathological leukocyte trafficking.

This year 471 members have been awarded this honor by AAAS because of their scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications. New Fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a gold and blue (representing science and engineering, respectively) rosette pin on Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Fellows Forum during the 2008 AAAS Annual Meeting in Boston.

Fifty-three University of California researchers have been elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in this year's annual election. Nine UC campuses and all three of its affiliated national laboratories are represented in this year's election. The UC-affiliated fellows constitute more than 10 percent of the 471 new association fellows.

With this latest election, there are approximately 580 UC researchers who are fellows of the association.
