UCSF Hosts science night at Rosa Parks School on April 24

WHAT:

The UCSF School of Pharmacy and fifth-graders at San Francisco’s Rosa Parks Elementary School will host a Science Night for students, their families and local leaders to showcase the school’s program in hands-on science training.

The event will include demonstrations of science experiments by UCSF School of Pharmacy students and fifth-graders in a “fair” setting. There will be special stations for younger students, and it is expected that 50 to 100 children and their parents, UCSF scientists, teachers and program organizers will attend. San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi also is expected to attend.

Members of the media are invited to cover the event.

WHEN:

Thursday, April 24 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

WHERE:

Rosa Parks Elementary School 1501 O’Farrell Street Western Addition, San Francisco

WHY:

Rosa Parks Elementary School and UCSF are working together to develop a magnet science program that inspires children from a wide range of backgrounds to pursue education and training in science. The program expands upon UCSF’s 20-year collaboration with the San Francisco Unified School District through a program known as the Science and Health Education Partnership, in which scientists and educators work together to support quality science education for K-12 students. The new program at Rosa Parks includes hands-on chemistry and biology classes for fourth- and fifth-graders, taught by UCSF School of Pharmacy students. The program will begin its third year in September.
