Gladstone Institutes ranks second in The Scientist survey of best places to work in academia

The J. David Gladstone Institutes is ranked North America’s second “best place to work in academia,” according to The Scientist magazine’s annual survey, published in its October issue.

The Gladstone Institutes, whose scientists investigate the causes of such illnesses as cardiovascular disease, HIV/AIDS, and Alzheimer’s disease, placed second among the 40 institutions represented from North America.

The only California institution in the top 10, Gladstone improved on its #3 ranking of last year, placing ahead of such institutions as Harvard University, Vanderbilt University, and Stanford University. St. Judes Children’s Hospital was ranked #1.

Gladstone received its highest marks for its management and policies and job satisfaction -- the factors cited by the magazine as being most important to academic scientists.

“Our commitment to excellence in research must be matched by our commitment to attracting and retaining leading scientific talent,” said Gladstone President Robert Mahley, MD, PhD.

“This honor underscores the dedication of our scientific and professional staff to our work and to building and maintaining an exceptional work environment.”

“Creating a truly collaborative culture has been critical in maintaining and growing an inspiring workplace.” said John LeViathan, Gladstone Institutes human resources manager. “In a highly competitive environment like the San Francisco Bay Area, we are gratified our investigators put us so high on the list.”

The J. David Gladstone Institutes, affiliated with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), is dedicated to the health and welfare of humankind through research into the causes and prevention of some of the world’s most devastating diseases.

UCSF is a leading university that consistently defines healthcare worldwide by conducting advanced biomedical research, educating graduate students in the life sciences, and providing complex patient care.
