J. David Gladstone Institutes building dedication and 25-year anniversary ceremony

EVENT: Dedication ceremony for $76 million research building adjacent to the UCSF Mission Bay campus. New building to be dedicated to research into the causes of HIV/AIDS, cardiovascular disease and such neurodegenerative illnesses as Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: The J. David Gladstone Institutes, a group of three nonprofit medical research institutes affiliated with UCSF, celebrates its 25th anniversary with the dedication of its new 200,000 square-foot building, housing upwards of 300 scientists and support staff conducting research into some of the most devastating illnesses of our time.

In lieu of a ribbon-cutting ceremony, Gladstone's three trustees will unveil a bust of founder J. David Gladstone, a former real estate developer whose 1971 will created an endowment for medical research.

Participating in the day's events will be UCSF Chancellor J. Michael Bishop and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown.

DAY/TIME: Monday, December 6, 10 a.m.

PHOTO OPPORTUNITIES: At about 10:45 a.m., trustees will unveil a bust of J. David Gladstone in the building lobby. By 11:15 a.m., attendees will break into small groups for tours of the three laboratory floors, featuring science demonstrations on each floor.

PARKING: Autos: use valet parking in front of the building. TV trucks: park in the lot adjacent to the building; this lot will be generally reserved for valet parking, but attendants will allow media trucks to park as well.
