FACT SHEET: J. DAVID GLADSTONE INSTITUTES
· The J. David Gladstone Institutes is organized as a charitable trust engaged in basic research. Under the inspired management of its Trustees--Richard S. Brawerman, Albert A. Dorman, David Orgell (deceased), and Richard D. Jones--the assets of the trust have grown from about $8 million in 1971 to around $150 million today.
· The trust operates three institutes: the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology, and the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease.
· The Institutes are affiliated with the University of California San Francisco and San Francisco General Hospital, which are internationally renowned for biomedical and clinical research.
· Gladstone scientists have faculty appointments within UCSF departments appropriate to their professional disciplines. All physician-scientists have appointments to the San Francisco General Hospital medical staff.
• From an initial complement of 25 employees in 1979, the Institutes have grown to a total staff of 17 faculty-level investigators and more than 230 other scientists, fellows, students, volunteers, and research and administrative support personnel.
• The Institutes currently occupy about 80,000 square feet of laboratory and office space on the San Francisco General Hospital campus of UCSF.
• Although the Institutes are in good part self-funding, supplementary support for research is sought through outside peer-reviewed granting agencies. At present, the Institutes receive more than $13 million each year in outside funding.
· The Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease conducts research on the cause and prevention of coronary artery atherosclerosis. Established in 1979, this Institute is now recognized worldwide for its investigations in the cardiovascular research field.
· The Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology, founded in 1991, engages in research focusing on the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). This unique AIDS research center has attracted a group of outstanding investigators from diverse scientific disciplines.
· The Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease, established in 1998, focuses on the study of devastating neurological diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, HIV-associated dementia, and stroke. Research will be directed at greater understanding of the biology of disease with the goal of speeding development of new treatments.
