UCSF events for September and October, 2002

MISSION BAY TOURS

Mission Bay Tours Sign-up for tours of the site where UCSF is building its new 43-acre campus. Visitors also stop at the Catellus Mission Bay Visitors Center located at 255 Channel St. where they can view plans for the revitalization of the entire 303-acre neighborhood. Tours begin at 12 noon and end about 1:30 pm at the UCSF library, 530 Parnassus Ave. on the 3rd Thursday of each month. The tours are scheduled for September 19 and October 17. Saturday, September 1- Tuesday, December 31 1st Laurel Heights Art Exhibit Showcase on display daily from 8 am-5 pm on Sub Level 1 at 3333 California St. The exhibit features talents of Laurel Heights’ faculty and staff, and is a rotating show designed to feature unique and diverse art work. Brooke M. Stone, LCSW, will teach the MBSR classes on Thursday nights from September 5 through October 24, including an all-day session on October 19. Saturday, September 14 My Brother’s Keeper. IMPACT (IMProving Access, Counseling and Treatment for Californians with Prostate Cancer) sponsors a take-charge-of-your–life event about cancer at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, 1975 Post St., from 8:30 am –2:30 pm. The forum will provide valuable information about cancer that can save lives; the focus is the African American community because cancer is the second leading cause of death among African Americans, with the diagnosis of prostate cancer in men the most common. Chairs of the event include Mack Roach II, MD, UCSF associate professor of radiation oncology, medical oncology and urology; Gary D. Grossfeld, MD, UCSF associate professor of urology; and Marc A. Shuman, MD, associate director of the prostate cancer program at UCSF. Co-sponsors include the UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center, Mount Zion Health Fund and HERC (Heath and Environmental Resource Center.) The event is free and open to the public. Sunday, September 15 Champions Run for Children. The annual running event and festival to benefit the Pediatric HIV/AIDS Program at UCSF Children’s Hospital is set for 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at Kezar Stadium in Golden Gate Park. Free to spectators, the event sponsored by Peter St. Geme, Inc. features a fun run for all ages, races for children from ages three to 18, and a chance to watch some of the world’s fastest men and women runners compete for $30,000 in prizes in the Champions Run Invitational Mile. Diane Wara, MD, professor of Pediatrics, director of the UCSF Pediatric Clinical Research Center and of the UCSF Pediatric HIV/AIDS program, invites families and the UCSF community to enjoy the races, free food, and festive atmosphere. The 5K “Bananaman Chase,” sponsored by Jamba Juice, begins at 9 am, the invitational men’s and women’s mile races at 10 am and the children’s races sponsored by Whole Foods Market begin at 11 am. Wednesday, September 18-Saturday, September 21 Key to the Cure. The fourth annual charity shopping weekend will take place at Saks Fifth Avenue San Francisco and will benefit the UCSF Breast Oncology Program and Fashion Targets Breast Cancer, a charitable initiative of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. Laura Esserman, MD, MBA, director of the UCSF Breast Care Center at Mount Zion, and Joe Gray, PhD, UCSF professor of laboratory medicine and radiation oncology and program leader of the UCSF Breast Oncology and Cancer Genetics Program, will give brief remarks at the event kickoff from 6-9 pm on Wednesday. The launch party is underwritten by Mercedes-Benz USA, and will feature special appearances, live entertainment, a fashion presentation, silent auction, refreshments by Union Square area restaurants, and shopping. Saturday, September 21 The UCSF Women’s Health Center at the UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion plans a celebration of its grand opening with a Health Fair called "Passport to Health" from 11 am – 2 pm. Information and demonstrations will be given on acupuncture, breast health, herb consultation, massage, diabetes, bone density screening, clinical trials information, sports medicine and more. Sunday, September 29 Taste for the Cure. The UCSF Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center hosts the third annual “Taste for the Cure” from 2-6 pm at the Golden Gate Club in the Presidio. The theme is “Neighborhoods of San Francisco.” Healthy gourmet food, cooking demonstrations and live music will be featured. There will also be a silent auction. Cost is $60 per ticket in advance; $70 at the door; $40 for UCSF employees. All proceeds from the event go to the UCSF Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center, a multidisciplinary center specifically designed to provide women with streamlined, specialized breast health services based on an integrative model of care. Thursday, October 17 and Wednesday, October 23 The Osher Center for Integrative Medicine offers free information sessions from 6:30-9 pm on “Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction” at 1701 Divisadero Suuite 150. Learn more about relaxation exercises, meditation and mindful movement as well as developing inner resources for healing. Classes will take place on Wednesdays, October 30 through December 18, with an all-day session on Saturday, December 7. Friday, October 25 Academic Senate’s 2nd Annual Clinical Research Lecture. Neal L.
