Mission Bay Street Improvements Planned

Currently, the intersection of 16th, 7th and Mississippi Streets is often confusing for pedestrians, bicyclists and vehicles because it is controlled by a three-way stop at which westbound traffic on 16th Street does not stop. This is because a stop sign for westbound traffic on 16th Street would result in stopped vehicles stacking over the Caltrain tracks at this intersection, which would result in a very dangerous situation. This intersection also currently lacks pedestrian crosswalks and bike lanes.

In order to improve safety at this location Catellus Development Corporation, the master developer of Mission Bay, is currently designing the reconstruction of this intersection to include a traffic signal, pedestrian paths, and an extension of the bike lane across the tracks. The design plans are going through the City approval process and Catellus intends to begin construction no later than September 2003. Due to the complexity of the project, the reconstruction is expected to take approximately one year, with all intersection improvements completed by September 2004.
