Gladstone Scientist Offers Insight on Stem Cell Research

Researchers and staff at the J. David Gladstone Institutes welcomed members of the community to tour their new six-story life sciences building at Mission Bay on Monday, showcasing leading-edge scientific knowledge in coronary disease, HIV/AIDS and neurodegenerative diseases.

Bruce Conklin, an investigator in the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, was among the scientists to offer a glimpse of their work. An associate professor of medicine and molecular pharmacology at UCSF, Conklin highlighted the promise of stem cell research, explaining his studies on stem-cell derived heart cells designed to better understand heart rate control. Conklin's work is conducted primarily in Gladstone's Embryonic Stem Cell Laboratory, which is a core lab available to all UCSF researchers.
