When Chancellor Mike Bishop announced in July 2001 the first wave of scientists at Mission Bay, it marked an important milestone in the creation of the 43-acre teaching and research campus being built on San Francisco's eastern waterfront.

"I could not think of a more palpable manifestation that UCSF Mission Bay has become a reality," he said at the time.

The approval and release of the list also marked an end to the exhaustive faculty-driven process that was the subject of careful deliberation, lively debate and delicate negotiations over a five-year process.

The first group to move to the UCSF Mission Bay campus includes some of the University's youngest scientists as well as some veteran researchers who together will establish the first foothold at one of the nation's largest life science communities.

The faculty, from departments that run the gamut from anatomy to pharmaceutical chemistry, will be the pioneers of UCSF Mission Bay.
