Mission Bay

Questions and Answers

Print Version

How were the artists selected for the Mission Bay commissions? How can other artists have their work considered? How might one contact the Mission Bay Art Advisory Board?
The chancellor's Mission Bay Advisory Board invited several nationally and internationally acclaimed artists to visit Mission Bay and look at Phase I plans to see if they wanted to submit a site specific proposal. Several artists submitted proposals; they were reviewed; the board made its recommendations to the Mission Bay Art Planning Committee, which, in turn, made final recommendations to the chancellor. Susan Montrose, a member of the Mission Bay Art Planning Committee, functions as liaison to the Advisory Board. Artists or anyone else interested in the program may contact her at smontrose@chanoff.ucsf.edu.

Is there going to be a pool at the fitness center? Are UCSF staff eligible for membership? Is there a waiting list?
Answer: There will be two pools at the Mission Bay Community Center, a warm water indoor pool and a cool water outdoor lap pool. All UCSF students, staff and faculty and their families are invited to join. There is NO waiting list at this time. Memberships will go on sale in April or May of 2004. Are there conference facilities at Genentech Hall that are available for UC programs?
Answer: Genentech Hall is primarily a science and research facility, not a conference site. However, there is a 278-seat auditorium on the first floor as well as seminar rooms. The scheduling of the auditorium and seminar rooms is coordinated through the department of biochemistry. The contacts are Marilyn Hersh (mhersh@biochem.ucsf.edu) and Jill Warren (jwarren@biochem.ucsf.edu). Source: Facilities Management

What is the street address for Genentech Hall?
600 16th St., San Francisco, CA 94107.

How can I apply for a parking space when my lab moves to Mission Bay in October?
Parking is available for cars and motorcycles on temporary surface lots. A 600-car parking garage will open in fall 2004. Faculty, staff and students may purchase parking permits for Mission Bay at the campus bookstore. Monthly parking permit fees range from $83 for anytime to $9.20 for parking between 4:45 p.m. and 8 a.m. Visitor parking also is available and lots are equipped with self-service machines, which accept $1, $5 and $10 bills as well as credit cards. For more information, contact Parking & Transportation Services at 476-2566.

What is the certainty that the new campus will be completed as planned?
UCSF has every intention of developing the entire campus, including all proposed buildings. How soon it is completed depends on the timing of UCSF's need for additional biomedical research buildings and the availability of funding, both public and private. Despite the downturn in the economy, UCSF's capital campaign for private donations is going well, and we are beginning design work on the seventh and eighth buildings (one of which will be a parking structure). Does UCSF have the ability to stop, pull out or delay due to lack of need, funding or other reasons?
UCSF does have the ability to stop or delay individual buildings at any time. After the next two buildings are completed, there will likely be a multi-year delay until we begin a second phase of development. We have no intent of "pulling out". Source: UCSF Campus Planning

Have any Biotech firms moved in or signed leases in Mission Bay?
UCSF's plans to develop the Mission Bay Campus are not dependent upon whether or not biotech firms locate to the area surrounding the campus. This property is owned by the Catellus Development Corporation, and any questions regarding development on their property should be directed to them. Source: UCSF Campus Planning

What is the campus mail box number for Genentech Hall?
Each department laboratory will be assigned a box number before moving to Genentech Hall. Once that list of numbers has been decided upon, we will publish it on this web site. Box 2114 can be used for the Facilities Management Office at Genentech Hall.

How many classrooms will be available in Genentech Hall? Which floors are they on? How many people will each hold?
The first floor of Genentech Hall contains a lecture hall with 260 seats and a seminar room with 80 seats. On the second floor, there are 5 seminar rooms (18, 24, 24, 35, and 80 seats). There are also seven, 10-seat departmental meeting rooms throughout the building.

When will construction start on the Campus Community Center?
November 13, 2002.

When does concrete and steel construction start for the QB3 building?
Mid-November, 2002.

Who are the first scientists to move into Genentech Hall?
According to the Mission Bay occupancy guide, Charles Craik and Sue Miller, both School of Pharmacy researchers, will be the first scientists to move in early January 2003.
