Building the Campus
Print Version Photo Display Features Light and Shadows of Genentech Hall
Genentech Hall may be a new home for science, but its tricks of light and shadow are also giving new inspiration to photographers. In the first of what will be regular displays in the showcase windows near the first-floor elevators, sponsored by the department of Public Affairs, the work of San Francisco photographer Majed Abolfazli offers views of Genentech Hall that are at times fleeting, transparent and, literally, concrete. Raised in Iran and trained in the US, Majed's "Structures in Light and Shadow" reflects the abstract visual styling for which he has become known. "I am very conscious of my dual visual inheritance — the coherence, order and austerity of Persian art and the bright cacophony of the American tradition," says the longtime city resident. Majed began photographing Genentech Hall last November in order to create the Mission Bay website's online tour. He has returned periodically to record the building's many shifting moods.
