Building the Campus

Gladstone at Mission Bay Dedication, Dec. 6

The J. David Gladstone Institutes, a group of medical research institutes affiliated with UCSF, will dedicate its new $76 million research facility on the morning of Monday, Dec. 6.

Located at 1650 Owens St., just across the street from the UCSF Mission Bay campus, the six-story building brings Gladstone investigators and staff together while also bringing them closer to their UCSF peers.

The day's events begin at 10 a.m. with a dedication ceremony in the facility's 150-seat auditorium. The ceremony will be broadcast to an overflow crowd in a tent in the building's plaza area.

Speakers include UCSF Chancellor J. Michael Bishop, who will discuss the important relationships between Gladstone and UCSF, and former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown, who will talk about the importance of Gladstone's work to the City and County of San Francisco.

A highlight will be the premiere of a 12-minute video, which will detail the history of the Gladstone Institutes and provide an overview of the new building's unique features.

Tours of the facility, including scientific demonstrations on three laboratory floors, will follow the program.

The day's events also include awards to former UCSF Chancellors Joseph Martin and Julius Krevans for their crucially helpful roles through Gladstone's 25-year history.

Gladstone is composed of three institutes. The Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, which opened in 1979, focuses on atherosclerosis and its complications. In 1992, the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology was established to study HIV. The 1993 discovery that apolipoprotein E -- long studied at the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease for its role in heart disease -- plays a role in Alzheimer's disease as well led to the establishment of the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease in 1998.
