Mission Bay

Building the Campus

Gladstone Institutes Recognize Willie Brown

At the Dec. 6 dedication ceremony, Warner Greene, director of the Gladstone Institute for Virology and Immunology (GIVI), praised former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown for "his strong hand in shaping the Gladstone Institutes."

As Speaker of the State Assembly, Brown helped to secure funding for new AIDS research at San Francisco General Hospital, which became the GIVI, and as Mayor, helped pave the way for the new Gladstone building, which is located across Owens Street from the 43-acre UCSF Mission Bay campus. The J. David Gladstone Institutes celebrated the opening of that building and commemorated 25 years of scientific achievement at a day-long celebration.

For his part, Brown hailed the vision of J. David Gladstone, the Southern California developer whose will established the nonprofit's endowment, and Gladstone trustees who decided to buy land at Mission Bay.

Brown also described his involvement in negotiations with UCSF officials and Nelson Rising, chief executive officer of Catellus Development Corp., which has since become a real estate investment trust, in making sure that the top-ranked health sciences university built its second major campus in San Francisco's Mission Bay. UCSF is the anchor institution to an area that city and campus officials hope will evolve into one of the nation's largest biomedical centers. The Gladstone's move to Mission Bay represents UCSF's first scientific neighbor to move nearby and supports synergies among Gladstone researchers and their UCSF colleagues.

Brown was recognized formally for championing the Gladstone move to Mission Bay during an evening banquet featuring the inauguration of the first-ever Gladstone Trustee Awards. Honored recipients also included former UCSF Chancellors Julius Krevans and Joseph Martin, both of whom played crucial roles in the growth of the Gladstone Institutes through the years.
