Building the Campus

Gladstone Institutes to Expand Research Space at Mission Bay

When the laboratories of the J. David Gladstone Institutes open at Mission Bay, the six-story research building will accommodate about 520 employees - nearly doubling the Institute's present size.

Located at Owens Street and 16th Street, the 200,000-gross-square foot building built of stone, steel, and glass will be 100 feet longer than a football field, measuring about 400 feet long and 90 feet wide.

Designed by NBBJ Architects, the building will be directly across the street from the UCSF community center and adjacent to Genentech Hall, the first research building to open at the UCSF Mission Bay campus.

Although no specific groundbreaking date has been set, the Gladstone building is expected to be completed by the end of 2004, according to Todd Sklar, project manager.

The floor plans for the Gladstone research building call for:
1st floor-Administration and operations
2nd floor-Shell space
3rd floor-Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease
4th floor-Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease
5th floor-Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology
6th floor-Support services
Roof-Mechanical equipment

In addition to administrative offices and operations, the first floor will also have a 150-seat auditorium and several meeting rooms. One of the entrances to the building will be through a nicely landscaped plaza, where staff can have lunch and receptions.

The typical lab floor will have a specialized core lab space on one end, 92 laboratory benches, and flexible lab space for special use and equipment. On the outside part of the floor will be offices for the investigators, administrative assistants, carrels for postdocs, and lounge areas for the staff.

Elevators will be located in the middle of the building and glass-walled stairways will be located at both ends of the building to allow for rapid connection to adjacent floors.

The J. David Gladstone Institutes is a private nonprofit biomedical research institution affiliated with UCSF.
