Glad Tidings: Celebrating 25 years as a successful scientific institute is always a milestone, but celebrating in a sparkling six-story biomedical research building creates a blur of emotions. With an overflow crowd in attendance on December 6, 2004, Gladstone Institutes president Robert Mahley presided over the grand opening of the new facility, home to the Gladstone Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology and the Gladstone Institute of Neurological Disease. The building -- across the street from UCSF's Mission Bay campus -- provides approximately 200,000 square feet of space for laboratories and offices, and a 150-seat auditorium just off the first-floor lobby. It stands as a tangible manifestation of the legacy of J. David Gladstone, a successful real estate developer who left his estate to medical research.
