- 2 women to share major medical prize (Boston Globe)
The Boston Globe reports: "The nation's richest prize in medicine and biomedical research was awarded yesterday to two researchers for work that has improved disease treatments and may lead to new ones for degenerative and other age-related disorders. Joan Steitz and Elizabeth Blackburn are the first women to receive the 8-year-old Albany Medical Center Prize."

Forbes reports: "Amy O'Dell's school may or may not transform the brains of autistic kids. At the moment, its techniques are more art than science. ... Michael Merzenich, a UC, San Francisco professor, has developed computer games that might help Alzheimer's patients improve brain function (" Sharp As A Tack" )."

The New York Times reports: "Daphne Koller, a researcher at Stanford whose work has led to advances in artificial intelligence, sees the world as a web of probabilities. ... Ms. Koller is spending a sabbatical doing research with biologists at the University of California, San Francisco."

- UCSF Privacy Practices to Protect Patient Information: (UCSF News Office)
UCSF is committed to maintaining the privacy of patient information and takes any compromise of patient information very seriously. When patients are seen at UCSF, they are provided with a Notice of Privacy Practice (NOPP), which describes how UCSF may use and disclose their medical information in accordance with the Federal HIPAA Privacy Rule.
- UCSF to Celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (UCSF Today)
UCSF will kick off the 21st annual Asian Pacific American Celebration on Thursday, May 8, with entertainment, cultural celebrations and dance lessons at various UCSF campuses. The events continue through May 21.
- Author to Talk About Lessons Learned in Care Across Cultures (UCSF Today)
Anne Fadiman, an author, editor and teacher, will talk at UCSF about the lessons she has learned in cross-cultural health care on Wednesday, May 7, from noon to 1 p.m. in Cole Hall on the Parnassus campus.
