<ul> <li>Diverse doctors -- Letters to the Editor (<cite>Fresno Bee</cite>) A Fresno Bee reader said: "I commend The Bee for your report [article April 3] on the University of California at San Francisco study showing the gap between the racial and ethnic makeup of our populations and the physicians who care for them."</li> <li>A bigger bottom line for nursing homes (<cite>Los Angeles Times</cite>) The LA Times reports: "California nursing homes bolstered their bottom lines with much of the $590 million that state lawmakers provided them to better tend to the poor, while patient care declined by several key measures, according to a [UCSF] study to be released today. ... The study's lead author, Charlene Harrington, a UCSF professor and nationally recognized authority on nursing homes," is quoted.</li> <li>Disease That Allowed Torrents of Creativity (<cite>New York Times</cite>) The New York Times reports on "an article by Dr. Miller and [co-author UCSF neurologist William Seeley, MD, of the UCSF Memory and Aging Center] describing how FTD, or frontotemporal dementia, can release new artistic talents was published online in December 2007 by the journal Brain."</li> <li>Back to baseball from cancer (<cite>Tri-Valley Herald</cite>) Patrick Schalin, a senior on the high school baseball team, diagnosed with liver cancer February 1, was released from UCSF on Feb. 7 after a successful surgery. "Schalin's pediatrician signed his physical form, clearing him to rejoin the Valley Christian baseball team," said the Tri-Valley Herald.</li> </ul>

Dr. Alberts said UCSF was the birthplace of the biotech industry.</li> </ul>

<ul> <li>UCSF-SFGH physician to lead California Diabetes Program (<cite>UCSF News Office</cite>) Dean Schillinger, MD, associate professor of clinical medicine for UCSF and practicing primary care physician at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center, has been named chief of the California Diabetes Program.</li> <li>Art In the Presence of Frontotemporal Dementia (<cite>UCSF Today</cite>) UCSF neurologists William Seeley, MD, and Bruce Miller, MD, director of the UCSF Memory and Aging Center, recently reported a fascinating link between the minds of Anne Adams, a Canadian scientist turned artist, and music composer Maurice Ravel, famous for his composition "Bolero." The New York Times wrote about the finding in today's Science Times.</li> <li>Clements Receives International Pollin Prize for Lifesaving Discovery (<cite>UCSF Today</cite>) John A. Clements, MD, is the recipient of the 2008 Pollin Prize in recognition of his seminal contributions to the understanding of how lungs hold air, and to the development of a lifesaving treatment for respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in infants.</li> </ul>
