  • Taiwan President says hi-tech sector must continue key role (Manufacturing Business Technology)
    Manufacturing and Business Technology reports: "President Chen Shui-bian said Monday [at a global health forum] that Taiwan's hi-tech industry should continue to play the key role in leading the development of a knowledge-based economy, and strengthening the country's competitiveness in the face of globalization. ... [The forum] aims to discuss the future of Taiwan's industry innovation through speeches given by experts from international research agencies, including the UCSF School of Medicine... ."
  • Aging and healing (Oakland Tribune, ANG papers)
    Frank Grimaldi, program director of general practice residency at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Dentistry, talked to the Oakland Tribune about how age and gender affect healing.
  • 3-Minute Interview: Jill Myers (San Francisco Examiner)
    The Examiner profiles Jill Myers, a child specialist at UCSF Children's Hospital, who uses performance art to help sick children cope with their illness. Myers is directing a group of teen patients in a performance at the de Young Museum at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

  • CNA reaches tentative agreement with UC (KTVU-TV - Mornings On 2)
    KTVU reports: “The California Nurses Association has reached a tentative agreement with all University of California hospitals. The nurses work at UC San Francisco and 4 other medical centers and student health centers on the other 5 UC campuses. The 3-year deal would give them pay hikes between 6-8% this year, and limit schedule changes.   • Tech forum in Taiwan (WHDH-TV, Boston -- Asia in Focus)
    President Chen Shui-bian said at a technology forum Monday that Taiwan should continue to play a key role in global IT development. The forum, organized by Taiwan Industrial Technology Association (TITA), March 17-18, includes presentations from international research agencies including the UCSF School of Medicine.

UCSF RADIO COVERAGE

  • Prisoner Health Live Remote Broadcast -- Juvenile Justice and Mental Health (KQED-FM 88.5 (NPR/APR) San Francisco)
    Forum broadcasted live from San Francisco General Hospital yesterday morning reporting on mental health care in the juvenile justice system. SFGH is the provider of last resort for the poor; the ER sees every gang-related gunshot and stabbing victim in San Francisco. Forum reports: "With estimates that one in five youths in the system has serious mental health problems, what is being done to improve care?" --- Air Time: 10 AM

UCSF HEADLINES

  • What gets a female's attention -- at least a songbird's (UCSF News Office)
    Allison J. Doupe, MD, PhD, a professor of psychiatry and physiology and a member of the Keck Center for Integrative Neuroscience at UCSF, and Sarah C. Woolley, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in Doupe's lab, report in the March 18 issue of PLoS Biology that "social cues modulate the performance of communicative behaviors in a range of species, including humans, and such changes can make the communication signal more salient. In songbirds, males use song to attract females, and song organization can differ depending on the audience to which a male sings."
