Kevin Grumbach, director of the University of California San Francisco's (UCSF) Center for California Health Workforce Studies and professor and chairman, UCSF Department of Family and Community Medicine, will testify before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, in a full committee hearing on "Addressing Healthcare Workforce Issues for the Future," at 2:30 PM ET, today.
- Scientists Find New Receptor for H.I.V. (New York Times)
Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and colleagues report in the journal Nature Immunology they "have discovered a new way that HIV attacks human cells, an advance that could provide fresh avenues for the development of additional therapies to stop AIDS," said the New York Times. "Dr. Warner C. Greene, an AIDS expert and the director of the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology here who was not involved in the research, said the findings were 'an important advance in the field.'"

New research shows HIV drugs may increase the risk of heart disease. NBC 11 visited the cardiology clinic at San Francisco General Hospital, the first of its kind in the nation, where aggressive screening has helped HIV patients identify the early warning signs of heart disease using technology like a high resolution ultrasound. --- Air Time: 11AM

- Global Health Sciences, CTSI to Host Town Hall Meetings on International Projects (UCSF Today)
UCSF’s Global Health Sciences (GHS) and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) are hosting four town hall meetings this month to work with faculty and staff on developing strategies to improve pre- and post-award administration at UCSF for international projects.
- Study finds overweight children have less elbow range of motion (UCSF News Office)
"Children who are overweight have less range of motion in their elbows than their normal-weight peers, which could make it tougher for them to exercise in order to lose weight, the findings of a research study suggest," reports Phyllis Brown in the UCSF News Office. "'Overweight children are encouraged to participate in sports. But athletic activities like pitching or hitting a baseball or shooting a free-throw in basketball require full elbow range of motion,' said senior study author Melvin Heyman, MD."
